Breakdown of writers Workshop and writing centers:
TIME
Writers Workshop: Monday, Tuesday & WednesdayRead Aloud - 5 minutes
The students will witness the teacher modeling her thoughts during the read aloud. Teacher Model Writing - 5 minutes
Based on what was read, the teacher will write a sample piece in order to model the procedures of the writing process. Whole Class Writing - 10 minutes The class will write a piece together. This will be lead by the teacher, but all ideas will come from the students. Topic Brainstorming - 3 minutes The students will quickly pick a topic they would like to write about. It is in this time that they can discuss with other students about what they plan on writing. Independent Writing - 17 minutes Students will write about the topic they chose. This will be a silent time for students in order that nothing distracts them from getting their thoughts on paper. Student Sharing - 10 minutes In groups or as a whole class, students will share what they wrote. |
Writing Centers: Thursday & FridayEvery Thursday and Friday, students will have two 30 minute sessions to pick a center in order to strengthen specific writing skills.
Weekend News Students write about what happened the last weekend or what they have planned for the following weekend. Roll-a-Story
Students roll a dice three times, each time assigning a character, setting, and problem. Word Wall Stories
Students use words from the word wall to write a story. Fix-it-Up Sentences
Students edit the conventions on these sentences in order to strengthen their editing skills. Stretch a Sentence
In order to strengthen student's revising and word choice skills they make these simple sentences into descriptive phrases. Voice Recording
In order to improve sentence and reading fluency, the student will record themselves reading their published work and listen to it. |
