One Week of Lessons
Anna, at The Measured Mom, and Becky, at This Reading Mama, created a 12 part series on teaching writing to primary grades. They include 12 writing lessons, 2 for each stage of writing, but 2 extra for drafting. Of their lessons, these are the ones I plan on using in my future classroom. By clicking on the picture titling each lesson, you will be linked to the original lesson plan.
Using a Graphic Organizer: A Simple Prewriting Activity
- This lesson teaches students what is important to put in a story, how to pick the important details, and how to organize those details.
Use Invented Spelling
- This lesson helps students understand that spelling is not the biggest issue when drafting or writing. It offers different ways to invent spelling without having to ask for the spelling of a word and disrupt the flow of thought.
Put Boring Words in Jail!
- This lesson helps students with word choice and revising skills by teaching them that there is always a better word hoping to get placed in their stories.
Use a Checklist to Edit
- This lesson reviews the basics of how to use a checklist to check for conventional errors when editing a paper. I particularly like it because sometimes teachers overlook the basics and this lesson is all about those simple steps students may not know yet.
Share Your Writing
- This lesson teaches students how to present their published work by reading with expression and being proud of what they have written.
